Heating disrupts the native starch granule, after which the material is dried and milled. The resulting product develops viscosity in cold water, while performance varies with botanical source, process, particle size and formulation.

Product Overview

Pre-gelatinized starch is produced by physically gelatinizing starch, followed by drying and milling. Unlike native starch, it can hydrate and build paste viscosity in cold water without a cooking step. It is generally supplied as a white or off-white powder and is selected where rapid thickening, binding, adhesion, plasticity and water retention are needed in a dry-mix or granulation process.

(1) Performance Characteristics

Pregelatinization makes starch cold-processable. Hydration speed, viscosity profile, tack, water binding and film behavior depend on the starch source and manufacturing conditions, so products with the same general name may not perform identically.

1. Cold-water dispersion

The powder wets, swells and develops a paste in cold water without pre-cooking. Particle size and mixing intensity affect lump formation and hydration speed.

2. Viscosity and body

It builds viscosity rapidly and provides body to aqueous or powder systems. The final value depends on concentration, temperature, shear and holding time.

3. Binding and adhesion

Pregelatinized starch provides tack, cohesion and film formation, helping powders or granules retain shape during forming and drying.

4. Water retention and plasticity

Water binding can reduce rapid moisture migration and improve plasticity, handling and surface finish in mineral or powder formulations.

5. Compatibility and stability

Cement, gypsum, salts, fillers and other additives can change hydration and viscosity. Compatibility should be checked in the complete formulation.

(2) Product Uses & Functions

In construction mortar, wall putty and gypsum products, pre-gelatinized starch can provide rapid body, adhesion, plasticity and water retention. It often complements cellulose ethers but does not replace their full performance profile.

As a feed or granulation binder, it helps fine particles agglomerate, improves wet cohesion and supports pellet or granule integrity after drying.

In ceramic casting and foundry sand systems, it can improve green strength, moldability and handling before firing or final curing.

In papermaking, textile sizing and water-based adhesive systems, it can contribute tack, film formation, surface strength and process viscosity.

In fertilizer granulation and other industrial powder systems, it supports nucleation, particle growth and forming strength. Dosage should be balanced against water demand, drying speed and final disintegration requirements.

  • Appearance: white or off-white powder.
  • Processing: physical gelatinization, drying and milling; no chemical identity should be inferred from the term alone.
  • Confirm cold-water hydration rate, viscosity, particle size, moisture, adhesion and water demand.
  • Select the grade by application and validate dosage using the actual powder composition, mixing energy and curing or drying process.
